How to Whiten Yellowed Shoe Laces: A Practical Guide

Yellowed shoelaces can detract from the look of otherwise clean and stylish shoes. Luckily, there are several simple methods to whiten them and restore their fresh look. Here are some of the most effective ways.

1. Use Baking Soda and Vinegar

Baking soda and vinegar are known for their whitening properties. Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with 2 tablespoons of vinegar and add some warm water. Soak the laces in this solution for 30 minutes, then thoroughly rinse them under running water.

2. Lemon Juice and Sunlight

Lemon is a natural whitening agent, and its effect is enhanced by sunlight. Soak the laces in lemon juice for 1–2 hours, then let them dry in direct sunlight.

3. Whitening with Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is a powerful whitening agent that helps remove stains and yellowing. Pour peroxide into a container of water in a 1:1 ratio and let the laces soak for 15–30 minutes. Then rinse them with cold water and let them dry.

4. Washing with Bleach

If you have bleach on hand, you can use it for more stubborn yellowing. Add a small amount of bleach to warm water and soak the laces for 10–15 minutes. Rinse them and let them air dry. Caution! Bleach can weaken fabric, so avoid frequent use.

5. Using Toothpaste

Toothpaste (preferably whitening) can be effective for gently cleaning laces. Apply the paste to the laces, scrub with a soft brush, and let it sit for a few minutes. Rinse and let them air dry.
